(Read my pet camera post here) And when some time ago, people started using them as baby monitors, some of us recognized their potential role as pet monitors. It’s a really simple concept, and what makes some pet cams different than baby cams, is that some internet-connected pet cams offer you to talk back to your pet, or even to remotely trigger a treat dispenser.
It might sound strange at first, and you might laugh and ask – why would anyone like to hack into my pet cam?! But believe me, there are people that do and they have done it many times before. Regardless if they do it for fun or profit, hackers have been really attempting to find a flaw in pet cams and hack in. But if you think about it, it’s not strange at all, pet cams can let hackers hear and see what’s happening in your home. How to prevent hackers from hacking your pet cam
Even thinking about the fact that someone can use your pet cam to look at you, your family and your home might make you want to throw it out. But lucky for you, you don’t have to. There’s a way to keep voayeurs, blackmailers and thieves away that doesn’t involve unplugging or throwing out your perfectly working pet cam. Here are some of the things you can do to ensure privacy and security by preventing hackers from hacking your pet cam:
Change the default password
It’s the very basic of rules that you should follow with any new device you buy, because this is the easiest way that a hacker can get into your cam. Sometimes all it takes is downloading a copy of the camera’s manual in order to find out the default password it came with.
Update The Pet Cam’s Firmware
Even if you just bought it, regularly check for available updates to the device’s software. By not using the latest version of the software, you expose yourself to vulnerabilities that have been found in the software version, which makes your cam vulnerable for attacks.
Secure your wireless network connection
Even if you’re not the proud owner of (a pet and) a pet cam. Making sure your wireless network is secure is of great importance for your privacy. In this case, it’s one of the things that pet cam hackers can abuse. If you’re not sure on how to do this, there are millions of tips and guides on the internet that you can follow.
