If you are a cat owner, then you know how messy things can get when it comes to cleaning the litterbox. Cats are generally clean animals. They lick themselves all the time, they don’t like being in dirty spaces and they always bury their ‘’business’’ after they are done.

Unfortunately, cats don’t know how to clean out the litter box. At least not for now. They have you for that. You are the parent in their life who gives them food, who pets them, plays with them and cleans after them. So, all the burden falls on your shoulders.

What if I told you that there’s an easier way to clean up after your cat? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, let me introduce you to sifting litter boxes.

How Do Sifting Pans Work?

If you are already familiar with sifting litter boxes, then you know that the principle is simple. In the past, sifting litter boxes were not quite functional, and sometimes, they’ve created even more mess.

If you’re looking for a perfect blend of functionality in design, new and improve sifting litter boxes have appeared on the market today. The principle is still somewhat the same so allow me to explain it. There are 3 sifting pans. Each sifting pan has openings in the bottom, sort of like slots. Once you stack all three pans, those slots fill each other, and the bottom becomes solid.

Once your cat fills the litter box, you just have to lift up the top tray and move it around a little so that the clean litter falls back down in the remaining two trays. After that, the top pan will only contain the solid.

All you need to do now is to dump those solid remains in the garbage, and you are almost done. After you have dumped the solids, take that pan, rotate it 180° and now place it under the remaining two pans. If it sounds easy, it’s because it is. There is not much to explain, just lift and sift the litter box.

Pros and Cons

Just like every other product, the sifter litter box might not satisfy everyone’s needs and wishes.

As you may have guessed, there are some benefits as well as drawbacks when using this product. You will often hear mixed reports about this type of litter boxes. Here are the pros and cons when it comes to this product and what to keep an eye on when picking the best sifting litter box.

Pros

  • Quick – you will be able to clean out your cat’s litter box in a matter of seconds.
  • Hands-free – your hands won’t get dirty.
  • The product itself – it is a very smart idea and design.
  • Durability – since it is made out of plastic, you won’t have to worry about breaking it.

Cons

  • Dust – you will have some problems with dust when sifting the pan.
  • Urine – cat urine can stick to the pan, and you might need to wash it.
  • Cleaning – every once in awhile you will have to clean all of the pans.
  • Small waste – smaller waste can find its way through the slots on the pans.

This is a great idea and a great design. I recommend you use clumping litter if you decide to buy a sifting litter box because you will have much less trouble cleaning it. So, now that you know what to expect from a sifting litter box it is up to you to find yourself the one that will suit you and your cat the best.
